Diving into Metal Roofs

Standing Seam Metal Roofs

Standing seam metal roofs (also knowns as Standing Seam Steel roofs) are defined by their vertically-oriented flat steel panels and concealed fasteners. These types of roofs are also described as having raised seams that rise above the level of each panel’s flat area. Standing seam systems can be used for either metal roofing, which is the most common, or metal walls. A distinguishing feature with standing seam systems is that the systems’ fastener are hidden, whether the panels are attached to a roof deck using clips or whether the panels are directly fastened to the decking material under the vertical legs using fastener flanges.

Clean, Modern Aesthetic

Standing seam steel roofs are becoming more and more popular in architectural applications because of their modern aesthetic. In addition to the sleek, straight lines offered by these panel systems, the metal panels can be coated in almost any color, including custom colors to match or compliment the structures which they cover.

Energy Efficiency

Standing seam steel roofing systems are often made with cool roofing coatings that have highly reflective pigments. This means these systems do an excellent job of reflecting the sun’s rays and dispelling the associated radiant heat that other roofing types may retain. In standing seam metal roofing systems, the panels generally aren’t pinned, meaning they can expand and contract better than they would if affixed in a more traditional manner. When you restrict the expansion and contraction needed for proper thermal movement of a metal panel, you can run into problems, such as oil canning, fastener withdrawal, increased noise, and other issues.

Pros and Cons

Standing seam steel is one of the longest lasting roofing solutions.  These types of roofs can last of 50 years with very little maintenance.  They are not susceptible to catching fire, being torn off by wind, or being punctured by debris.  Further, since the fastener doesn’t go through the metal’s surface, regular maintenance to check for loosening or damaged fasteners is less frequent.

One of the most significant drawbacks to standing seam metal roofing is the fact that is can be more expensive when compared to other roofing types, including stone coated steel systems. If damage occurs with one panel or a smaller section of the roof, it can often be tough to replace that section of the roof efficiently because the damaged panel must be separated from the panels around it that are remaining on the structure. This process can be especially tedious for mechanically seamed systems, as each panel will need to be un-seamed and the sealant will also need to be removed.Tar and gravel roofs use multiple waterproof and fireproof layers of materials. Then, contractors use tar to sandwich all the layers together in a single, dense material. While tar and gravel provides superior UV ray protection, and great protection in wind storms, they also emit harmful noxious fumes which can actually delay building occupancy after a job is complete.
